4. On Dec. 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Rosa Parks refused to obey a bus driver’s order that she give up her seat in the colored section to a white passenger, after the white section was filled. Parks was not the first person to resist bus segregation. She is called “the first lady of civil rights”.
5. In 1954, Martin Luther King Jr. became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery and began his
passive fight against racial prejudice and hate.
6. Alabama is the only state with all major natural resources needed to make iron and steel. It is also the largest supplier of cast-iron and steel pipe products.
